In a time where we’ve had to spend many more hours indoors working from home, we’ve all been burning more candles, specifically scented ones. Theresa Molnar, executive director of the Sense of Smell Institute, says “Scents can have positive effects on mood, stress reduction, sleep enhancement, self-confidence, and physical and cognitive performance.”
When candles are burned or scents added to a diffuser, the fragrances are inhaled and can have a neurological effect on our brains, including creating emotional reactions to certain smells. Selecting your candles based on their scent or fragrance can be a great way to have a positive effect on your mood, reduce anxiety, and even combat fatigue.
We have created a list of some of the benefits of different scents and what they can help with, so you’ll always know which scent to use!
Many people suffer from anxiety, and if you have one of these scents in your home, it may help to alleviate some of those symptoms. Bergamot, Chamomile, Frankincense and Sandalwood are all common fragrances found in scented candles that can have a positive effect on your mood. There’s also Geranium, which can help balance your mood and Rose, which has been used to boost confidence.
Whether you’re feeling mentally or physically tense, these fragrances have been used to ease the tension you’re feeling: Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Jasmine and Ylang Ylang. These can be in a scented candle, a diffuser or applied to your body as an oil. Many of these scents are used in massage for that exact reason!
If you’ve had a long day at the office or you’re trying to have a relaxing weekend, these scents can help with both physical and mental fatigue. Basil, Cardamon, Ginger, Grapefruit and Rosemary can all assist in relieving your mental and emotional fatigue. These can work fantastically in a warm bath, or in a diffuser in your home. For physical fatigue, we recommend Ginger, Lemon, Lavender, Basil, Orange and Peppermint - these will help revitalize you and get you perked back up in no time!
